THE DICTIONARY PROJECT

Since the 2002-03 school year, the First Presbyterian Church of Bay City has been proud to participate in The Dictionary Project. The goal of this nationwide project is provide every third grade student with their own dictionary. Each year, this church proudly distributes approximately 300 dictionaries to the third grade students in the Bay City I.S.D. Our hope is that these dictionaries will enrich the educations of these students now and in the future.

This project is truly a group effort. Our church’s Session approves the funds for the project, the Youth Group attaches labels in the books and sorts them by school, and many members of the congregation visit the local elementary schools to distribute the dictionaries.

The local project through reinforces the Presbyterian Church’s tradition of supporting educational causes in our country.

Bay City I.S.D. Superintendent Dick Walton has expressed his appreciation to the church for the donation. “Because of the socio-economic level of many families in our community, there are a great number of children who would never be able to afford a dictionary to have at home. The church’s benevolence and expression of giving has made this possible,” Walton commented. “Reading is the basis for the gathering of all other knowledge, and a gift of dictionaries will facilitate these students’ learning for many years to come.”
